Eifion Thomas was a native of Cefn Bryn Brain, Cwmllynfell, Glamorganshire.
Born on 31 May 1912, son of Tom Henry Thomas. At 14 he began work
underground but at 19 he went to the Preparatory School in Carmarthen for 3
years. He was then one of six successful applicants out of forty for places
at the Memorial College, Brecon. He spent three years there and one year in
the University in Swansea.
In 1938 he accepted a call to the Congregational Churches at Libanus and
Cwmcamlais, Breconshire. He often spoke of that day when he was ordained in
a large marquee in a field near the chapel in Libanus. There was not enough
room in the chapels for the crowds that came. He used to travel the five
miles separating the two chapels on a bike between services. He married
Lorna from Brecon who was a great help to him during his ministry until her
death in 1992.
Eifion was called to five churches on the other side of Brecon in 1949.
These were Pennorth; Brechfa; Tredomen; Bethania, Lower Chapel and Ebenezer,
Upper Chapel. He was to lead these churches into the United Reformed Church
in 1972. He retired around 1988 after serving these rural chapels for some
40 years – often returning again and again to care for the members of this
pastorate. When he did finally retire the membership was one less than it
had been in 1949.
He died peacefully at Brecon Memorial Hospital in September 1999. His
funeral took place in The Plough URC, Brecon.
